Animation is not merely moving images, but primarily the art form of creating a believable ‘life’ on a 2-dimensional plane.
I learn more from watching people, pets, bugs, critters and birds than anything that can be taught in a book or in a class.
Movement is a science, and animating it comes from studying things as they occur in nature. Movement can be mechanical or whimsical. A good life drawing needs to capture not only the overall gesture of the subject, but the ‘personality’ as well.
Below are samples of life drawings and sketches I’ve done through the years. While some took time and ample study to pull off, others were born of the stroke of a pencil.
